Behind the Scenes: Bertelsmann HR Services Internship Blog

Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services

Feed:

HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.

Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.

This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!

Interns in Germany participate in company presentations to learn more about the different business units.

A busy time...

Hello All,
The first I would like to apologize that I wrote my last Blog in May but my colleagues and I had a very busy time behind us. We created four new websites for Bertelsmann. I was responsible to create snippet, add text and I worked also at the layout for our websites. The new websites looked pretty good, epically the function job search is very clear and our customers have a good overview which kinds of jobs we offer on our different divisions. You can find also many articles about our Company which could be very helpful for people who would like to learn more about our Company.
During this time we got new interns Sheena, Felix, Sascha and Tommy. The new interns are very funny, especially when we spent time after work. Sarah’s and Swetlana’s internship are finished now. Swetlana did a great job and she got an offer to works as assistant to our CEO of Bertelsmann, Inc. Also, Sarah won the contest from the Event called Talents Meets Bertelsmann…congratulations!
As you can see there are many opportunities to create your own career by Bertelsmann.
I had also many friends here from Germany who visited me. The time was amazing but I am now tired of so much sightseeing in New York. Anyway, New York is such an interesting nice town and I will try my best to enjoy my last month together with my friends and colleagues.
Best Wishes, Sebastian Korst.

Visitors from Germany

14. May 2010 @ 18:39 · Assigned to -
Hey guys,

It is Friday again and my sixth working week is coming to an end. I started working on my final project, which is dealing with Mobile Marketing, Mobile Advertising and opportunities for Bertelsmann in this area. The topic is really interesting and I did not know how many different channels and variations of advertising on the cell phone exist. It is definitely a marketing form with a great future and I love researching on such an innovative issue.
Last weekend I visited the city of Boston, which I really liked. I went there by bus for just one day, but it was really worth it. Although the weather was a little rainy in the morning, we went to Harvard. When the rain stopped we hurried to the harbor, viewed several famous history sights and ate the famous Boston Cream Cake.
Moreover, last Friday we had our Department Evening and went to a bar with our entire team. That was so much fun…we danced and laughed a lot...the only problem was getting up at 5:30 AM the next morning to catch the bus to Boston!
Yesterday my friends from Germany arrived in New York and I will spend the next 10 days with them. That’s why I am out of office for three days next week! I am very excited to show the Big Apple to them and we will celebrate my 21st birthday on Monday! That is going to be a huge party! I let you know about it in my next blog, so be curious !

I wish you all a great weekend….TGIF!!!

Best regards,

***Sarah***

A busy week...

05. May 2010 @ 23:16 · Assigned to -
Hi,
Sorry, for the late update but lately I was very busy. I worked together with Chris and our colleagues from China on a new website. We had lots of things to do, we developed a website which had to look similar to our page www.createyourowncareer.com .
I think this website is a good and helpful example to show the employees, students and other people who are interested in Bertelsmann on how to improve their changes in creating their career. It is very beneficial to employees.
This week we also have a guest in our office. Judith Charles (Manager Employer Branding - Bertelsmann HR Services) from Germany is here. She is very friendly and explained to me what her work responsibilities are in Germany.
I went to a New York Yankees game last Friday. It was amazing to see one of nicest stadiums in the world. This past Saturday I was also in German Pub, called “Zum Schneider”. It was unbelievable to see a real Bavaria Pub in the middle of Manhattan .It absolutely is a nice place to forget the United States for a second…All the best, Sebastian Korst.

Happy Monday!

03. May 2010 @ 20:59 · Assigned to -
Happy Monday Everybody,

I just started my working week with a coffee and new energy from the sunny weekend, which I mostly spend in New Yorks parks. Unfortunately the weather is not so nice today and I got wet on my way to work as I walk about 25 minutes from my Apartment to our office on Broadway.
Yesterday, one of our colleagues from Germany, Judith, arrived in New York, and she will spend the working week with us in our offices.
Unfortunately it is the last week of work for my co-intern Tiffany, we will all miss her as hanging out with her was always fun, even though she was often amused about some of our strange English word-buildings and pronunciation! On Friday she will give us her final presentation about a project she worked on. I have to decide about the topic of my final presentation soon, so I will start brainstorming later to find something I would like to take a deeper look at.
Moreover I am still working on organizing the Flickr photos and I will get a new task from Chris this week, regarding the layout and design of our Create Your Own career website.

I hope all of you have a good start in the week!!!

Best regards,

***Sarah***

Hello everybody,

Hope that everything is going well. Currently, I am in the office on a Sunday evening and think about the nice weather outside. However, Bertelsmann office is open 24 hours a day and enables people to have flexible working hours. In my case I can work on my bachelor thesis because of some internet connection problems at home. During the week my sister and a friend were visiting me. Besides sightseeing and exploring New York, I also introduced them to our Bertelsmann team.

In the coming week I have to decide for a final project. This will be the end result of my internship. Moreover I will present the outcomes of my chosen goals at the beginning. So I am excited about the results.
Wish everybody a good start in the week.

Best regards

Swetlana

Hard Decision!

26. April 2010 @ 17:52 · Assigned to -
Hello Everybody,

It’s Monday again and I hope your last week was as exciting as mine.
At Bertelsmann I have started uploading pictures and photos to our Create Your Own Career account on flickr. There are very many interesting and also funny pictures, so that this task gives real pleasure to me and the rest of the team. This week I will continue organizing the pictures, give names and tag them.
Moreover I have to work on several other projects, for example on updating and editing websites of Bertelsmann and I do much research.

For my university in Germany I am preparing a short summary of my present stay in the United States, which is really easy to do as I experienced so much during the last four weeks. I rather have to select what I tell them on the three pages I am allowed to write! Shall I describe the shopping outlet in Jersey I have visited, shall I tell them of Williamsburg and its parks in Brooklyn, Shall I depict the Tim Burton exhibition in MOMA or the Rockefeller Centre and 5th Avenue? A tough decision …

Busy with this question, I remain with wishing you a joyful week.

Yours,

***Sarah***

Beautiful day !!!

26. April 2010 @ 17:29 · Assigned to -

Hi Guy's,

What a beautiful day today…this reflected the whole week. This week I learned a lot in content management. I created several things on our homepage and Chris gave me new IT-Projects for next week.
I had also a good time outside work. I went to New Jersey, Queens and I found a German restaurant which is close to “little Italy”. I ordered a “Wiener Schnitzel” this was amazing…I think it is a great place to eat. Especially for a group in facebook, called like “The Schnitzel Father”.
During the week I ran along the Hudson River Boulevard and I think it is nice place to hang out with fiends as well. Several people used the place for Barbeque, basketball or soccer. It is another option for different activities in Central Park for work or bicycle. I am very excited about this weekend because, I will travel to a friend in Washington DC!

Hasta luego, Tschuess, Bye…Best wishes Basti.

Citizenship at Bertelsmann

23. April 2010 @ 19:11 · Assigned to -
Hello everyone,

I cannot believe how fast the time runs. I have just 1 month left. After my graduation in July my status will change from student to an employee. I am excited to make new steps in my life but I wish to do these in New York. Living in the City is fulfilling all my expectations.
Yesterday Random House had a Childrens Day. Employees brought their children to work. Together with other interns we helped out. This is citizenship, one of Bertelsmann core values.

Today my sister and a friend are coming to visit me for one week. I will show them the New Yorker life- the people, the culture, the city, the food, the office…everything. Additionally I have a great chance to see places which I have not even after 3 month.

Wish all a good weekend

After a while...

20. April 2010 @ 18:15 · Assigned to -
Hello Everybody,

Last week was very interesting for me. I learned many new things, especially in IT. The Software tools are very important for our department and it is absolutely necessary to work with the software
During the week I went to a basketball game from the New York Knicks…It was FUN! The Sport events are very different to those in Europe or especially in Germany. During the half time and before the game starts, there are a lot of side events. If you decide to visit a basketball, baseball or football game you have to come earlier to the game and enjoy the shows before the start.
On the weekend I went with Sarah and her friend to a outlet Mall in New Jersey (Jersey’s Garden). If you like to get some cheap clothes, this is the right place to save your money.*lol*.

Best wishes, Basti.

Time runs...

16. April 2010 @ 23:07 · Assigned to -
Hey,

This week went by so fast, it is already Friday and the last 5 days really ran.
The other interns had to present about Bertelsmann again, and this time I joined their presentation. My part was to find out about Bertelsmann’s Talent Management and its Online Survey Tool, which was a really interesting topic for me, because I have never thought about it before.
The presentation went pretty well and we got helpful feedback on our communication techniques. My next presentation at university is going to be super and everybody will ask themselves: “Where did Sarah learn to present like this?”!
Moreover Chris showed me how to update websites and create new ‘Snippets’, which can be included on the sites.
I was busy working on a new layout for the Intern Orientation Check-In list, which is given to every intern at the beginning of his work, so that he is introduced to the company, co-workers and the topic of HR Services in the best and most effective way.

In my free time, I enjoyed the good whether in Central Park and on Times Square, went to a Chocolate Restaurant, where you can possibly eat the best Chocolate Fondue on earth, and I visited the Greenhouse, a bar where Alicia Keys was supposed to be, but unfortunately did not show up. Maybe she is there next time….

I wish you all a great and joyful weekend.
Best regards,

***Sarah***
